There was a study in 1978 that said 5% of the public thought of themselves as chronic procrastinators. Today it’s 75% and growing. The increase is probably the result of modern day distracters that kill time and squash potential…TV’s in every room, Netflix, web surfing, mobile phones, video games, to name a few of the big ones. At work, it’s constant e-mail and Facebook, Instagram and Twitter only a click away.
In simple terms, procrastination is avoiding doing things that need doing. For the sales rep, it’s not making difficult follow-up calls, or not “asking for the order.” For the Project Manager, it’s not asking hard questions of her/his team as to when a task they are working on is going to be finished, and possibly “why will it be late?” For the business owner, it’s identifying industry and technology trends, but not making the decision to take required action to participate in the changing building and digital construction business paradigm.
To be fair, we all procrastinate at times, but it can reach a point where it becomes a big problem in our lives and in our business. The more one procrastinates, the bigger a task becomes and the harder it is to take action. How many times could we have rectified a problem situation we were aware of, if we had taken appropriate action sooner?
Where would your company be if you joined the digital revolution in construction three, five, or even ten years ago? Would you be leading, or following? These are the types of hard questions you need to ask yourself. Another is: will 2D tools and technology be enough to survive and/or thrive in the future? Is it too late to jump on the 3D Modelling, BIM, VDC, Digital Construction bandwagon? What challenges lie ahead if one does decide to take action?
The facts are simple. Previous pioneers slashed through the jungle of technological uncertainty and cleared a path for others to follow. There is no longer any doubt that digital construction has arrived and this now cleared path is about to become a four-lane paved super highway. Procrastinate and you may be left behind, but take comfort in knowing you are not alone.
